How to Prepare for Your First Pilates Class
Walking into any new fitness class can feel a little intimidating. Here's exactly what to expect at Evergreen, so the only thing you have to think about on your first visit is the workout itself.
What to wear
Fitted, comfortable clothing you can move in — leggings or fitted shorts, and a top that won't ride up during floor work. Avoid anything too loose; instructors need to see your alignment to give useful corrections.
What to bring
- Grip socks — required for Reformer classes (traction on the machine footbar), optional but recommended for Mat. Available for $12 at the front desk if you don't have a pair.
- Water bottle — we have a filtered fill station in the lobby.
- A small towel — optional, some students like one for Barre Fusion.
Mats, reformers, and small props are all provided — you don't need to bring your own equipment.
When to arrive
Plan to arrive 10–15 minutes early for your first visit. That gives you time to sign a quick waiver, get a studio tour, and let your instructor know about any injuries or areas of concern before class starts.
What actually happens in class
Every class opens with a short warm-up focused on breath and spinal alignment, moves into the main sequence of exercises, and closes with a brief cool-down and stretch. Instructors teach to the whole room but circulate constantly to check form and offer individual modifications — that's the entire point of keeping classes capped at twelve people.
Is it normal to feel lost at first?
Completely. Pilates has its own vocabulary — "neutral spine," "scoop," "imprint" — that takes a class or two to click. Tell your instructor it's your first time; they'll keep an eye on you and simplify cues as needed. Most new students say the second class already feels dramatically more familiar than the first.
